Becoming a PE teacher

Postby sprunty » Wed Oct 15, 2008 11:48 am

I have a Bsc degree in Sports Management and Im an ACE (American Council on Exercise) qualified personal trainer. I am interested in maybe becoming a PE teacher is there any way of me doing this without doing a 4 year degree in PE?

Hi Sprunty. You could try having your degree assessed by the Teaching Council (www.teachingcouncil.ie) and if they approve it as a teaching degree, you could check with UL to see if they would accept it for their Graduate Diploma in Education (PE). See UL's website at www.ul.ie and go to the Postgraduate courses in the Education and Health Sciences section. You may be able to do some sort of conversion course for PE teaching in the UK but I don't know if it would be recognised over here for teaching in second level schools unless your degree is approved by the Teaching Council. So check those options out and you may be lucky. The only other suggestion I would have would be to see if you could teach on one of the Post-Leaving Cert (PLCs) courses run by the various VECs around the country as you stand. They have quite a lot of courses related to sport/outdoor education/coaching/fitness etc. Having some coaching qualifications from relevant professional bodies here would also help. Good luck! Miriam

i am looking at becoming a PE teacher...but i cant apply to UL for the graduate programme because me degree is not PE related. Would you know of any degree that is PE or sports science related that i cud complete by distance learning or part time in Ireland or even aboard (UK).
im in full time employment and due to other committments cant leave and take up 4 yrs of college.
Thanks

Nothing that I am aware of. Anyway, the Teaching Council would have to approve it also if you intended teaching here in Ireland.
