Hi there,
I also have a FETAC in veterinary assistance. At the moment I live in Dublin
and need to remain here. What can I do with this certificate? Would I be able to study animal care in dublin once I am 23 even if I do not have the points? And could you maybe explain the entitlements of a mature student as I'm a little confused about the whole thing!
Thanks alot

Hi Amy. You could apply for the Diploma in Veterinary Nursing in UCD. It is one of the few courses that is recognised by the Veterinary Council of Ireland (www.vci.ie). Graduates of this course will be entitled to call themselves Veterinary Nurses (https://myucd.ucd.ie/program.do?programID=51). Also have a look at https://myucd.ucd.ie/admission/mat_app.ezc and you will see what is involved in making applications as a mature student. There is a link half way down that page to Pages 8 and 9 of their Mature Students' Booklet where you can see all the different degrees that take applications from mature students. However, I do not see Veterinary Medicine listed there. However, they do have other animal related degrees on offer such as Animal Science. Have a look at https://myucd.ucd.ie/program.do?programID=46. Those full-time degrees that are in the CAO system would be included in the free tuition fees scheme. There would be a registration fee of around €950 approx on acceptance of an offer. Unfortunately it is too late to apply for 2008 entry through the CAO but 22nd August 2008 is the closing date for Leaving Cert/FETAC applicants for the Diploma in Veterinary Nursing which are made directly to UCD. This course is not covered by the free tuition fees scheme and the fees were €3,200 for 2007/08. They usually go up by about 10% annually but check with UCD. I am not sure if the registration fee has to be paid for this course. Students are required to hold a minimum of 20 hours per week of paid continuous employment in a UCD-registered veterinary practice. This employment must be arranged prior to application and should start no later than the date of registration with UCD. With your FETAC course in Veterinary Assistant you could possibly get work in one of the following areas: Animal Grooming, Animal Care, Kennel Keepers, Pet Shop Worker/Manager,Stable Manager, Animal Rescue Worker, Zookeeper. Hope that helps. Miriam
