UCD scientists have made a key breakthrough in the battle against inflammatory bowel disease (IBD)

A team of researchers from UCD's Conway Institute found a process of keeping the lining of the gut functioning properly, preventing inflammatory leaks from the intestine.

The findings, published in the scientific journal, 'Gastroenterology', provide information that may be important in developing a new approach to the treatment of the disease.

The Conway Institute led the study with national and international collaborators such as the Leuven University, University College London and the Institute of Molecular Medicine, Trinity College Dublin.

Science Foundation Ireland and the German Research Foundation funded the research.
